18 arrested in connection with Shah's murder --2010-02-08
Police have raided various suspicious places of the capital last night and detained 18 persons in suspicion of involvement in the incident or having information about the murder of Jamim Shah. Talking to Kantipur FM Monday morning, Nepal Police spokesperson Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Bigyan Raj Sharma said, police had sealed all exit points from Kathmandu, scanned suspicious persons leaving the valley, and mobilised security personnel in plain clothes to seek information on the incident.
Indirectly conceding weakness of security personnel in the incident DIG Sharma said, the police are investigating the incident from all angles. Meanwhile, a meeting of the top security officers held at the police headquarters Sunday accepted weakness of the police as the murderers fled from the scene without being caught.
Police have said, a silencer could have been used with the gun used to fire at Shah as police personnel deployed in the nearby security posts said they did not hear the firing. There are at least half-dozen embassies around the area where the firing took place and the murders had fled through the road along the President's office and Police training academy among other places with high security sensitivity.
Meanwhile, Television Broadcaster's Association has condemned the incident and demanded the reality be made public within 24 hours.-----

CA debate sees only Maoists supporting 14-state federal structure --2010-02-01
The second day of debate in the Constituent Assembly on proposed 14-state federal system saw only the opposition party Unified CPN (Maoist) supporting the concept. Speaking during Monday's discussion on the draft of the State Restructuring Committee, CA members of other parties said such a large number of states would not be economically viable for Nepal.
Nepali Congress leader Dr Ram Sharan Mahat said 14 states have been proposed without any basis. He said the decision has been taken at the whims of some committee members. Stating that federalism should ease the life of the people and ensure government services closer to them, Dr Mahat said the proposed 14 states are not administratively feasible to deliver these services. UML leader Shankar Pokharel said the committee made every effort to forge consensus among parties in preparing the report and admitted that the committee failed while naming states and determining their geographical locations.
He opposed the idea of carving states based on ethnicity, discarding other important aspects like population and geography. Moist lawmaker Khadga Bahadur Biswokarma, defending committee's draft, claimed that federalism based on ethnicity with autonomy would strengthen nationalism and national unity.
The lawmakers from Madhes based parties repeated their calls for single province in southern belt, despit

Nepal to witness partial solar eclipse on Friday --2010-01-14
KATHMANDU, Jan. 14 (Xinhua) -- Nepal will see the first solar eclipse of the year on Friday, and if the weather does not play foul, the partial solar eclipse will be visible from all parts of the country, according to astronomical sources on Thursday.
The moon will start blocking sunlight at midday when it comes between the sun and the earth in a straight line. The moon's shadow will fall on the earth to partially occult the sun for more than three hours. According to the B.P. Koirala Memorial Planetarium, Observatory and Science Museum Development Board, the eclipse will start from near Mahendranagar in western Nepal at 12:15 p.m. (0630 GMT), and end in the vicinity of Chandargadhi in eastern Nepal at 3:43 p.m. (0958 GMT). Maximum obscuration will be noticed from Chandragadhi and adjoining areas, where up to 65.5 percent of the Sun will appear dark at 2:14 p.m. (0829 GMT).
The last annular eclipse seen from Nepal was on Nov. 23, 1965, said Suresh Bhattarai of Nepal Astronomical Society. Meanwhile, the eclipse on Friday bears more significance to Hindus in Nepal as it falls on the day of Makar Sankranti. Devotees will throng rivers and other water bodies to take a holy dip to mark the festival.
Also, there is a tradition of performing various rituals during the eclipse, and taking bath for purification when it ends.

Million dollar car for President Yadav --2010-01-06
The President's office is preparing to procure a special bullet-proof car at a cost of about Rs 70 million (almost 1 million US dollars) for President Ram Baran Yadav and future Presidents' use possibly within this fiscal year, Annapurna Post daily reported.
We are consulting manufacturing companies for purchasing the car, said Baman Prasad Nyaupane, secretary at the President's office. The President's office is talking directly with the manufacturers as there is no authorised dealer for such high end cars in Nepal. Moreover, the companies have been setting their own specifications for a car to be used by a head of state. Such car is not available at manufactured state, but needs to be ordered. Finance ministry had earmarked Rs 10 million for the purchase of a bullet proof car for the President and Rs 10 million for other cars for use of the President's office this fiscal year. According to the report, the President's office has corresponded with the finance ministry after it found the amount was not sufficient for the required car. The finance ministry is reportedly positive on sanctioning the required amount for the car. President Yadav has been using a bullet proof car used by former King Gyanendra Shah at present. The government started the procurement plan for a new vehicle after it felt the necessity of an additional bullet proof vehicle for the Preside
